India has always been under the supervision of great political leaders who ran the government at different levels and took important decisions for the country. This article lists the top 10 most powerful politicians in India who made significant contributions towards the nation’s growth and became a source of inspiration for the youth. 

1. Jawaharlal Nehru (1889 – 1964)

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of Independent India. He was one of the assembly members to write the Constitution of India. He played a significant role in formulating India’s foreign policy. Under his leadership, India became the first county to adopt the Non-Alignment Policy. He was instrumental in the establishment of premium educational institutes such as Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and National Institutes of Technology (NIT). Nehru was awarded India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955.

2. Indira Gandhi (1917 – 1984)

Indira Gandhi, the only daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, was one of the strongest politicians of Independent India. She was the first female Prime Minister of India and no woman, after her, has held the post of a Prime Minister till date. She was an aristocrat leader and perhaps one of the most controversial political figures. 3. Narendra Modi (1950 – Present)

Narendra Modi is the 14th and current Prime Minister of India. He ranks 9th in the Forbes list of the world’s most powerful people. The focus of Modi led-BJP Government on the country’s social and economic growth is indisputable. In 2014, he launched the ‘Make in India’ movement with a vision to transform India into a manufacturing hub. His other prominent movements include Swachh Bharat Mission, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Startup India and Smart Cities Mission.

4. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar (1891 – 1956)

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, popularly known as Baba Saheb amongst his followers, was a great Economist, Jurist, Politician, and Social Reformer. He was the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. His ideas laid the foundation of Finance Commission of India and India’s Central Banking Institution – Reserve Bank of India. Dr. Ambedkar took a leading role in fighting against caste discrimination and did a lot to elevate the status of the untouchables in India. After his death, he was awarded India’s highest civilian honor Bharat Ratna in 1990.  

5. Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1924 – 2018)

Bharat Ratna Awardee Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji was the 11th Prime Minister of India. He took courageous and strategically important decisions to make India a nuclear power. He was the one to pass the Chandrayan-1 project. During his tenure, India’s GDP was raised to 8% and inflation level came down to 4%. His government started the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, making elementary education free and compulsory for children of age group 6 to 14 years.

6. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (1931 – 2015)

Dr. Abdul Kalam was a great Indian Scientist and also the 11th President of India, popularly known as ‘People’s President’. After his outstanding contributions in nation’s military missile development and the civilian space program, he was given the title of ‘Missile Man of India’. He has been honored with many prestigious awards, including Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan. Dr. Kalam is one such rare leaders who continue to inspire the youth due to his humble attitude, honesty, simplicity, and vision.

7. J Jayalalithaa (1948- 2016)

Jayalalithaa served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for a tenure of 14 years, spanning across 4 terms.Known for her excellent administrative skills, Jayalalithaa has done a lot for the state while she was in power. After introducing the ‘Cradle Baby Scheme’ to save girl child and abolish female infanticide, she became famous as ‘Amma’ or mother among her followers. 8. Sushma Swaraj (1952 – 2019)

She has always been loved for her modesty and attitude to help Indians & Pakistanis stranded around the world. She is quite active on the social media site Twitter. 9. Mamata Banerjee (1955 – Present)

West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamta Banrjee has emerged as one of the most powerful, contemporary women leaders of India. She is the first Indian women to hold a portfolio of ministries, including Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Ministry of Coal, Ministry of Youth Affairs, etc. She is also the founder and chairperson of Trinamool Congress. Under her leadership, the whole of Bengal has undergone a huge process of development and embellishment. 10. Amit Shah (1964 – Present)

Businessman-turned-Politician, Amit Shah is BJP’s president and the current Minister of Home Affairs of India. After winning the elections in 2002, he was appointed the youngest minister in Modi’s government. Since then, he is working actively to make Bhartiya Janata Party, a Pan-India party. He, along with Modi, has left no stone unturned to assure victories of BJP in several state elections. Because of his strategic mindset, he is known as the ‘Chanakya’ of Indian politics.
